Amadeus usually graces me with his presence because I have fingernails and give good scratches, but this time he actually decided to just hang out with me and relax. We’d been sitting there for a while, when someone they knew drove up the driveway. You can hear the New Guinea Singing Dogs in the background, and see Amadeus start to fidget. I knew he was about to start howling, and you can hear me say "you're thinking about it" just as... I ran out of disk space. Less than three seconds later, he started howling. Right there, laying down, not a foot away from me. It might have been the most beautiful sound I've ever heard. (I've heard him howl before, but never so close. It really does make the bones in your chest vibrate — though not nearly as hard as when the lions get into the act and all start roaring together too.) These wolves all live at the Conservators' Center in Mebane NC. CCI rescues abused and neglected threatened animals and gives them a safe, healthy home for the rest of their lives -- where they're spoiled rotten and loved unconditionally. CCI is mostly known for their lions and tigers, but the rescued wolves are my personal favorites. [My family has been volunteering/working at CCI for years. Visitors are not allowed to approach the animals this closely.]
