Next Tuesday, will be the one year anniversary of Kosovo’s declaration of independence from Serbia. A ski resort managed by Serbs closed its doors in protest last year. But, now, Brezovica has reopened its slopes. Its guests are happy, but there are worries about the resort's future. A year after independence, ethnic Serbs still manage most of the businesses, while the skiers who come here are almost all ethnic Albanians. Amid the snowy slopes, the two communities seem to get along. Other frequent visitors: soldiers from the international peacekeeping force, stationed nearby. For many, this haven of harmony is a model. Ilir, Albanian skier, "We need to forget the past, and build relations with our neighbours. One of our neighbours is Serbian. We are certain, that very soon our relations with Serbia will be like this ski resort!!" But there are problems in this winter wonderland. Before independence, Brezovica was publicly owned by Serbia. After closing to protest Kosovo's declaration of independence last year, the resort re-opened this season but it needs major investments to modernize. Kosovo wants to privatize the station, but Serbia refuses to give up what it considers as its property. Agron Veseli, Albanian Ski instructor, “Serbia has to recognize that Kosovo is now an independent state. It must agree to leave the management of this ski resort to professionals." Most people here don’t mind where the money comes from, as long as it comes. Srecko, Serbian restaurant manager, "I have respect for the Albanians even if, for me, Kosovo will always be part of Serbia. It's up to the politicians to find a solution. No matter who manages the resort, things must get better."
