For rickshaw driver, Babu, it’s a real slog earning a living on the congested streets of Delhi’s Chandni Chowk market. He takes home around $4 US dollars a day: barely enough for his family of four. Now, modern science is hoping to put an end to Babu’s woes. Introducing "Soleckshaw". It is a new vehicle that can be pedaled or run on a solar-powered battery. Advocates say the invention is a boon for India’s eight million rickshaw drivers. The batteries are plugged into solar panels for recharging, leaving behind a zero carbon footprint and easing the burden for drivers. Rickshaw workers themselves say they are proud to pedal the novel invention. Facing ever-increasing traffic and air pollution, the inventors at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research hope the rickshaw can one day be an alternative to cars. With US $2500 Nano car soon to hit India’s roads the Soleckshaw arrives just in time. The vehicle is currently on trial and not for sale. But developers hope to launch improved models for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
